Travel Information

This page shares basic information to help you plan your trip to Zanzibar. If you have questions that are not covered here, you can always ask before booking.

Entry and Visa

Most travelers need a visa to enter Tanzania. Visas can be obtained online before travel or on arrival at the airport. Requirements may change, so it’s best to check official sources before your trip.

Your passport should be valid for at least six months from your arrival date.

Best Time to Visit Zanzibar

Zanzibar can be visited all year.

  • The dry months from June to October are popular for beach and outdoor activities.
  • The months from December to February are usually warm and good for swimming.
  • Short rains usually fall in November, and longer rains between March and May. Tours still run during these periods, but weather may affect sea activities.

What to Pack

Light clothing is best for Zanzibar’s warm weather. For tours and village visits, modest clothing is recommended.

Useful items include:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Sunscreen and a hat
  • Swimwear
  • Insect repellent
  • Light rain jacket during rainy months

Local Currency and Payments

The local currency is Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). Some hotels and larger places accept USD, but local payments are usually made in shillings.

ATMs are available in major towns, but not everywhere. It’s good to carry some cash for small expenses.

Culture and Local Etiquette

Zanzibar has a strong local culture influenced by African and Islamic traditions. In public areas, especially towns and villages, dressing modestly is appreciated.

Asking before taking photos of people is respectful and recommended.

Health and Safety

Zanzibar is generally safe for visitors. Basic travel insurance is recommended.

Drinking bottled water is advised. For sea activities and safaris, all tours follow local safety guidelines.

Time Zone and Electricity

Zanzibar follows East Africa Time (GMT +3). Electricity sockets are usually UK-style (Type G). Bringing a travel adapter is recommended.

Getting Around

Transfers for booked tours are arranged by the operator. For free time, taxis are widely available and can be arranged on request.
